Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Ltd develops Covaxin with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). Whereas, Covishield is developed by the Oxford-AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII).
Covaxin is a deactivated vaccine which implies that it is made up of dead coronaviruses. It is safe to be injected into the body. When administered, the immune cells recognize the dead virus, triggering the immune system to make antibodies against the coronavirus.
On the other hand, Covishield is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (identified as adenovirus) from chimpanzees. When the vaccine is injected into the body, it stimulates the immune system to start developing antibodies and prepares it to attack any coronavirus infection.
However, the two vaccines have been recognized for emergency use and are authorized by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in India. The reports suggest that both vaccines help prevent Covid-19 infection.
