According to the Union Health Ministry, pregnancy does not increase the chances of COVID-19 infection. The ministry further added that most pregnant women would be asymptomatic or have a mild disease, but their health may decline rapidly, which might affect the fetus.
Therefore, pregnant women must take all precautions to protect themselves from getting infected. One of the significant precautions is taking vaccination against COVID-19. It is further advised that a pregnant woman should take COVID-19 vaccines.
The COVID-19 vaccines available are safe, and vaccination protects pregnant women against COVID-19 illness/disease. A vaccine may have side effects which are typically mild, like:
Currently, it is not known about the long-term adverse effects and safety of the vaccine for fetus and child. There are chances when a pregnant woman may experience some of the following symptoms within 20 days after getting the COVID-19 vaccination, but that is very rare (one in 1-5 lakh people). In such a case, immediate attention is required.
